Why You Should Be Nuts About Peanut Butter
Friday, 30 January 2009
By Diego Malingo

This is a common question. Most people have seen something about peanut butter, sometimes saying it is good for you, sometimes that it is not so good for you. The truth is, it depends on what kind of peanut butter you are eating. There are essentially two kinds:

1 - Natural Peanut Butter. This is 100% crushed peanuts, with no additives. Think Adam's, the household brand when it comes to natural peanut butters.

2 - Processed Peanut Butter. This is a mixture of crushed peanuts, added hydrogenated fats, sodium, sugar, and other ingredients. Think Kraft, Skippy, Squirrel, all of the brands that have been around forever.

Based on the ingredients, it should be somewhat obvious that processed peanut butter is much less healthy. None of these additives are necessary, nor are they healthy. The sugar and sodium are somewhat worrisome, but much more serious are the hydrogenated fats. These are a real health hazard, as they can lead to heart disease.

Ladybugs are now for sale by the pint, quart or gallon. The average-sized garden can get by on a quart or less, as there will be about 25 to 30 thousand bugs per quart. The cost is generally less than five dollars a quart. The average adult ladybug consumes between 40 and 50 aphids a day.

Praying mantis cases are also available and each one hatches up to 400 young. The cost is rather nominal for a case. A few gardeners have reported that this insect disappears rather rapidly from the garden, so you might want to experiment with just a few to begin with. They will eat any insect they can catch. Frogs and lizards can also control pests by eating them. You can make your garden hospitable for your natural allies by keeping a water source - just
